Cảnh Công nước Tề đi chơi núi Ngưu, trèo lên mặt thành, đứng ngắm trông rồi tràn trề nước mắt:
- Đẹp quá chừng, nước ta thật là sầm uất, thịnh vượng! Thế mà nỡ nào một tuổi, một già, bỏ nước này mà chết đi. Giả sử xưa nay người ta cứ sống mãi, ta quyết không bỏ nước Tề mà đi nơi khác
Lũ Sử Không, Lương Khưu Cứ thấy vua khóc, cũng khóc theo:
- Chúng tôi đội cơm vua có cơm rau mà ăn, có ngựa hèn, xe xấu mà cưỡi, cũng còn chẳng muốn chết, huống chi nhà vua
Một mình Án Tử đứng cạnh, cười!
Cảnh Công gạt nước mắt, hỏi:
- Quả nhân hôm nay đi chơi thấy cảnh mà buồn. Không và Cứ đều theo quả nhân mà khóc, một mình nhà ngươi cười, là cớ làm sao?
Án Tử thưa:
- Nếu người giỏi mà giữ được mãi nước này thì Thái Công, Hoàn Công đã giữ mãi. Nếu người mạnh mà giữ mãi được nước này, thì Trang Công, Linh Công đã giữ mãi. Mấy vua ấy mà giữ mãi, thì ngày nay chắc vua đang mặc áo tơ, đội nón lá, đứng ở giữa cánh đồng, lo việc ruộng nương, có đâu được chỗ này mà đứng, có còn rỗi đâu mà lo đến cái chết. Chỉ vì hết đời này đến đời kia, thay đổi mãi mới đến lượt nhà vua, mà nhà vua lại than khóc thì quả là lạ thật! Bởi thấy bầy tôi siểm nịnh, cho nên tôi cười.
Cảnh Công nghe nói, rót chén rượu tự phạt, rồi tự phạt luôn Không và Cứ mỗi người một chén.

Trang Tử câu trên sông Bộc. Sở Vương sai hai quan đại phu đem lễ vật mời ông ra làm quan. Trang Tử cầm cần câu không nhúc nhích cũng không thèm nhìn lại, nói:
- Tôi nghe vua Sở có con thần quy, chết đã nghìn năm. Vua Sở quý nó và cất trên miếu đường. Con quy đó, chịu chết để lưu lại cái xương của mình cho người sau quý trọng hay lại chịu thà sống mà kéo lê cái đuôi của mình trong bùn?
Hai vị đại phu nói:
- Thà sống mà kéo lê cái đuôi trong bùn còn hơn!
Trang Tử nói:
- Thôi, về đi. Ta đây cũng chịu kéo lê cái đuôi của mình trong bùn...

Chương 52 - Người Bán Thịt Dê
Vua Chiêu Vương nước Sở mất nước phải bỏ chạy. Có người hàng thịt dê tên Duyệt, cũng chạy theo vua.
Sau Chiêu Vương lại trở về, lấy lại nước, bèn ban thưởng những người chạy theo khi trước, có cả anh hàng thịt dê nữa.
Ai ai cũng nhận thưởng. Chỉ có một mình anh hàng thịt dê chối từ, thưa:
- Trước nhà vua mất nước, tôi mất nghề bán thịt dê. Nay nhà vua còn nước, tôi còn nghề bán thịt dê. Thế là tôi được giữ y nghiệp cũ, đủ ăn rồi, còn dám mong thưởng gì nữa!
Vua cố ép, người hàng thịt dê, thưa:
- Nhà vua mất nước không phải tội tôi, nên không dám liều chết. Nhà vua lấy lại được nước không phải công tôi nên tôi không dám lãnh thưởng.
Vua bảo:
- Để rồi ta đến nhà ngươi chơi.
Người hàng thịt dê nói:
- Theo phép nước Sở, phàm kẻ có công to, được trọng thưởng, thì vua mới đến nhà. Nay tôi xét mình tôi, trí mưu không đủ giữ được nước, dũng cảm không đủ giết được giặc. Quân giặc vào trong, tôi lánh nạn, phải chạy theo vua, chứ đâu phải cốt ý theo nhà vua! Nay nhà vua muốn bỏ phép nước mà đến chơi nhà, tôi e thiên hạ nghe thấy mà chê cười chăng?
Chiêu Vương nghe nói ngoảnh lại bảo Tư Mã Tử Kỳ rằng:
- Người hàng thịt dê này tuy làm nghề hèn hạ, mà giãi bày nghĩa lý rất cao xa. Nhà ngươi làm thế nào mời người ấy ra nhậm chức Tam Công cho ta.
Người hàng thịt dê nói:
- Tôi biết chức Tam Công là quý hơn cửa hàng thịt dê. Nhưng tôi đâu dám ham tước lộc mà để nhà vua mang tiếng gia ân không phải nghĩa. Tôi thực không dám nhận, xin cho về giữ lấy nghề bán thịt dê!
Nói đoạn lùi ra ngay.

Chương 53 - Nhân Trung Dài
Một hôm, Vũ Đế nhà Hán nói với các quan:
- Ta xem trong sách tướng có câu: "Người ta nhân trung dài một tấc thì sống lâu một trăm tuổi"
Đông Phương Sóc đứng bên phì cười.
Các quan bắt tội vô phép.
Đông Phương Sóc cất mũ, tạ tội:
- Muôn tâu Bệ hạ, kẻ hạ thần đâu dám cười Bệ hạ, mà cười cái ông Bành Tổ mặt dài mà thôi!
Vua hỏi:
- Sao lại cười ông Bành Tổ.
Đông Phương Sóc thưa:
- Tục truyền ông Bành Tổ sống tám trăm năm. Nếu quả thật câu trong sách tướng mà Bệ hạ vừa nói là đúng, thì nhân trung ông ấy phải dài đến tám tấc, mà nhân trung dài tám tấc, thì mặt ông dễ thường phải cao đến một trượng.
Vũ Đế nghe nói, bậc cười, tha tội cho ông.

Chương 56 - Kiêu Căng Là Gì?
Một vị tể tướng đời Đường rất giỏi về chính trị, lại cũng là một vị tướng lừng danh. Người đương thời xem ông là một vị anh hùng dân tộc. Nhưng bao nhiêu danh vọng ấy không ngăn cản ông say mê đạo Phật một cách rất cung cúc.
Thầy của ông là một vị đạo cao tăng phái Thiền, thầy trò tâm đắc lắm, không phân biệt tước quyền.
Ngày kia, ông hỏi sư phụ:
- Thưa thầy, xin thầy cắt nghĩa cho đệ tử biết "ngã mạn" là gì?
Mặt của sư phụ đổi sắc, trợn mắt, hỏi với một giọng khinh mạn:
- Mi hỏi ta gì đó, đồ ngu!
Cử chỉ và lời nói bất ngờ ấy làm cho gương mắt tể tướng đỏ lên.
Bấy giờ nhà sư mỉm cười, bảo nhẹ:
- Thưa, đó là"ngã mạn" ạ!

Chương 57 - U Tịnh Đại Sư
Vị tăng kia, không hiểu gì về Phật pháp cả, nhưng muốn đánh lừa tín đồ, tự xưng là "U Tịnh đại sư". Để dễ gạt người chung quanh, ông ta có mướn hai tổ sư có tài ngôn ngữ để trả lời hộ ông ta, phần ông ta thì cứ im lặng mãi cho đúng với danh xưng.
Ngày kia, hai tên sư bè lũ của ông đi vắng, có một tăng lữ phương xa đến viếng. Tăng lữ hỏi:
- Thưa đại sư, thế nào là Phật?
Không biết trả lời ra sao, ông ta hoảng hốt, nhìn dáo dác bốn bên để tìm hai tên đồng lõa, nhưng không thấy.
Tăng lữ hỏi tiếp:
- Thưa đại sư, thế nào là Pháp?
Ông ta bèn ngước mặt nhìn trời rồi lại cúi nhìn đất, van vái trời đất gỡ nạn cho ông ta.
Tăng lữ hỏi nữa:
- Thế nào là Tăng?
Bấy giờ ông ta bí quá, liền nhắm nghiền đôi mắt lại.
Tăng lữ hỏi:
- Thế nào là Hỉ Xả?
Tuyệt vọng, ông ta bèn mở rộng hai cánh tay, ra dấu đầu hàng.
Tăng lữ sung sướng, ra về.
Dọc đường lại gắp hai tên sư đồng lõa của ông bịp nọ, Tăng lữ không ngớt ca ngợi vị "U Tịnh đại sư":
- Tôi đã hỏi Ngài: "Phật là gì?" thì Ngài nhìn bốn phương tám hướng để nói cho tôi biết rằng Phật ở khắp nơi, không nơi nào mà không có Phật. Tôi hỏi: "Pháp là gì?", thì Ngài nhìn trên cao dưới thấp, là ý Ngài muốn bảo với tôi rằng chân lý của Phật Pháp là tất cả không phân biệt cao thấp, thanh trọc. Để trả lời câu hỏi "Tăng là gì?", thì Ngài chỉ nhắm mắt lại, để nói cho tôi biết rằng kẻ nào nhắm mắt và ngủ một giấc say trong những chỗ thâm sơn cùng cốc là một bậc đại sư tăng. Rốt cùng, để trả lời câu chót của tôi "Thế nào là Hỉ Xả" thì Ngài mở rộng cánh tay để chỉ cho tôi biết đó là một ân huệ ban bố cho khắp cả mọi người biết tìm con đường sống... Thật là một bậc đại sư sáng suốt và lời giáo huấn của Ngài thật là vô cùng sâu thẳm!
Khi hai anh sư nọ về đến nhà, ông "U Tịnh đại sư" rầy to:
- Các anh đi đâu? Hồi nãy có một tăng lữ phương xa đến cật vấn ta về Phật pháp, anh ấy hỏi dồn ta bí lối, suýt ta đã mất cả uy danh rồi còn gì!

Huệ Tử làm quan nước Lương. Trang Tử tính qua nước Lương thăm. Nhưng có kẻ nói với Huệ Tử:
- Trang Tử mà qua đây, là để cùng ông tranh ngôi tướng quốc.
Huệ Tử lo sợ, cho kẻ canh chừng suốt ba ngày ba đêm, đợi Trang Tử đến thì bắt.
Trang Tử hay chuyện, không đi.
Sau rồi lại đến. Gặp Huệ Tử, Trang Tử bảo:
- Phương Nam có con chim tên là Uyên Sồ. Ông có biết không? Uyên Sồ từ biển Nam bay qua biển Bắc, nếu không gặp cây ngô đồng thì không chịu đậu: Nếu không gặp hột luyện thì không ăn nếu không gặp nước suối thì không uống. Có con chim ụt đang rỉa xác chuột chết giữa cánh đồng thấy Uyên Sồ bay ngang, sợ nó giành miếng ăn nên kêu to lên để dọa Uyên Sồ đừng đáp xuống. Nay, vì sợ mất ngôi tướng quốc của ông ở nước Lương nên ông kêu to lên dọa tôi sao?

Trang Tân bảo Sở Tương Vương:
- Nhà vua (ngồi xe) bên tả có Châu Hầu, bên hữu có Hạ Hầu sau xe có Yên Lăng Quân và Thọ Lăng Quân. Bốn người đó chuyên dâm loạn, xa xỉ, không lo việc nước, Dĩnh đô tất nguy mất.
Tương Vương bảo:
- Tiên sinh già rồi lẫn chăng? Hay là muốn rủa nước Sở đấy?
Trang Tân đáp:
- Tôi thực tâm thấy tất nhiên phải như vậy, không dám rủa nước Sở. Nếu nhà vua cứ sủng ái bốn người đó mãi như vậy, thì nước Sở tất mất! Tôi xin được lánh qua Triệu, ở đó một thời gian để quan sát những biến cố của nước Sở.
Trang Tân qua Triệu ở năm tháng. Quả nhiên Tần chiếm những đất Yên, Dĩnh, Du, Thượng Thái, Trần của nước Sở, Tương Vương phải chạy tróc tới thành Dương, sai người kỵ mã dẫn đường qua Triệu đón Trang Tân, Trang Tân bằng lòng đi.
Trang Tân tới, Tương Vương bảo:
- Quả nhân không biết dùng lời khuyên của tiên sinh, nay sự thế đã như vậy, làm sao bây giờ?
Trang Tân đáp:
- Tôi nghe tục ngữ có câu: "Thấy thỏ rồi mới nghĩ tới chó săn, cũng không phải là muộn, mất bò rồi mới lo rào chuồng cũng chưa phải là trễ". Tôi nghe nói xưa kia vua Thang và vua Vũ chỉ có trăm dặm đất mà hưng thịnh lên được, vua Kiệt, vua Trụ có cả thiên hạ mà bị nguy vong. Hiện nay nước Sở tuy nhỏ, cắt chỗ dài bù vào chỗ ngắn thì cũng còn được vài ngàn dặm, chứ nào phải trăm dặm mà thôi.
Nhà vua không thấy con chuồn chuồn kia ư? Nó có sáu chân bốn cánh, bay lượn giữa khoảng trời đất, cúi mổ con muỗi, con ruồi để ăn, ngửa hứng nước sương ngọt ngào để uống, tự cho rằng chẳng lo lắng gì cả, vì không cạnh tranh gì với ai, có ngờ đâu một đứa nhỏ cao năm thước lấy mật làm keo bôi vào tơ, cột cỡ đầu cái gậy dài bốn nhẫn mà bắt được con chuồn chuồn, chuồn chuồn rớt xuống đất, bị kiến ăn thịt. Con chuồn chuồn còn là vật nhỏ.
Đến như con chim sẻ vàng kia, cúi thì mổ những hạt gạo trắng, ngửa thì đậu ở trên cây rậm rạp, hăng hái vỗ cánh, tự cho là chẳng lo lắng gì cả vì không cạnh tranh với ai, có ngờ đâu rằng có công tử vương tôn nọ, tay trái giương ná tay phải cầm đạn, bắn nó ở chỗ cao mười nhẫn, đem về làm chim mồi bắt chim sẽ khác, ban sáng nó còn bay nhảy trên cây rậm mà tối lại bị xào nấu với muối giấm, chỉ trong khoảnh khắc đã rớt vào tay cậu công tử nọ. Con sẻ còn là vật nhỏ.
Đến như con hộc vàng kia bay lượn trên sông biển, đậu ở cái đầm lớn, cúi thì mổ con lươn con cá chép, ngửa thì ăn của nấu, cây hoành, hăng hái vỗ cánh mà lướt luồng gió mát, bay lượn trên cao, tự cho rằng chẳng lo lắng gì cả vì không cạnh tranh với ai. Có ngờ đâu người thợ săn sửa soạn mũi tên và cây cung màu đen buộc sợi dây tơ vào cây tên bắn nó ở chỗ cao trăm nhẫn, nó bị trúng mũi tên nhọn, bị sợi dây tơ kéo về (phía người thợ săn) và rớt xuống đất trong buồng gió mát: Ban sáng nó còn bay lượn trên sông biển mà buổi tối đã bị nấu nướng trong cái đỉnh cái vạc rồi. Con hộc vàng còn nhỏ.
Đến như việc Thái Linh Hầu cũng vậy. Phía Nam, ông ta đi chơi miền Cao Pha, phía Bắc ông ta leo núi Vu Sơn, uống nước suối Như Khê, ăn cá sông Tương, tay trái ôm hầu non, tay phải đỡ ái thiếp, cùng với họ rong ruổi ở trong miền Cao Thái mà không lo gì việc nước cả. Có ngờ đâu Tử Phát được lệnh của Sở Tuyên Vương bắt trói ông ta bằng sợi dây tơ đỏ, đem về cho Tuyên Vương.
Việc của Thái Linh Hầu còn là việc nhỏ. Đến việc của nhà vua, ngồi xe, bên trái có Châu Hầu, bên phải có Hạ Hầu, sau xe có Yên Lăng Quân và Thọ Lăng Quân, ăn lúa gạo của đất được phong, chở vàng trong kho do bốn phương tiến cống, cùng với bọn đó rong ruổi ở miền Vân Mộng, mà không lo gì việc quốc gia thiên hạ cả. Có ngờ đâu rằng Nhương Hầu phụng mệnh vua Tần, đem binh lại đóng đầy thành Mãnh Tái mà nhà vua phải trốn ra khỏi thành đó.
Tương Vương nghe xong, mặt tái mét, toàn thân run rẩy, rồi cầm viên ngọc khuê trao cho Trang Tân, phong cho Trang Tân làm Dương Lăng Quân, và cho hưởng đất Hoài Bắc.

Mùa hạ, tháng năm sau khi đã diệt dược Sở Bá Vương, Hán Bái Công cho đặt tiệc rượu ở cung nam thành Lạc Dương thiết đãi quần thần.
Rượu uống được vài tuần, Bái Công nói:
- Ớ liệt hầu và các tướng, Trẫm hỏi câu này, ai nấy đều nên nói cho thực, không giấu giếm: Trẫm dở dĩ được thiên hạ là vì sao? Hạ Hạng sỡ dĩ mất thiên hạ là vì sao?
Cao Khởi, Vương Lăng thưa:
- Hạng Võ sỗ sàng và khinh người, Bệ hạ nhân hậu và yêu người. Bệ hạ sai người đánh thành cướp đất, hễ ai lấy được đâu thì ban cho đấy, đó là cách cùng thiên hạ cùng lợi chung. Hạng Võ ghét kẻ tài, ganh người hay, kẻ có công thì hại, người hiền thì ngờ vực, được trận không cho ai công, được đất không cho ai lợi. Sở dĩ mất thiên hạ là vì thế.
Bái Công mỉm cười bảo:
- Các ông chỉ biết một mà chưa biết hai. Nay như vận ở chốn trung quân, quyết thắng ra ngoài nghìn dặm, ta đâu bằng Tử Phòng, trấn thủ quốc gia, vỗ về trăm họ... ta đâu bằng Tiêu Hà. Cầm quân trăm vạn, đánh đâu thắng đấy, phá đâu lấy đấy, ta đâu bằng Hàn Tín. Ba người ấy đều là bậc hào kiệt trên đời, ta đều biết dùng cả ba, cho nên ta lấy được thiên hạ, Hạng Võ chỉ có một mình Phạm Tăng mà không biết dùng, cho nên chết về tay ta.
Vậy ta phạt các khanh một người một chung rượu.

Ngày xưa Phật cùng các đệ tử đi qua một khu rừng, vừa đến một mé sông... thấy có một đạo sĩ du già ngôi ở cội cây...
Phật hỏi:
- Ông ở đây bao lâu và đã tu chứng được gì?
Đạo sĩ nói:
- Tôi tu đã bốn mươi năm và đã có được phép khinh thân, đi qua con sông mà không cần đến ghe xuồng gì cả!
Nói xong, đạo sĩ niệm chú, nhún mình bay là là trên mặt nước và vượt qua sông nhẹ như chiếc lá... trước những cặp mắt vô cùng thán phục của các đệ tử Phật.
Phật mỉm cười, nói với đạo sĩ:
- Tưởng gì lạ lùng, chứ để đi qua con sông mà phải tốn công tu luyện đến bốn mươi năm, thật phí công uổng sức vô ích quá! Chỉ với đồng tiền nhỏ bé này, người đưa đò sẽ đưa chúng ta qua sông một cách rất là dễ dàng.
