Chương 1
Tiếng Cười Trong Đêm Khuya
Bob Andy và Peter Crentch đang về nhà. Hai bạn còn cách Rocky ba cây số, thì buộc phải bật đèn xe đạp lên. Vào mùa đông đêm xuống rất nhanh ở vùng núi nam Caliornie.
- Đáng lẽ, Peter nói, bọn mình phải lên đường về nhà sớm hơn.
-Ôi! Bob mỉm cười đáp. Mình không hối tiếc đã ở lại lâu hơn. Tắm thích quá!
Hai bạn vừa mới có một buổi chiều vui vẻ trên núi, tắm trong nước mát của dòng thác. Không có gì làm lu mờ sự thích thú của hai bạn, trừ việc Hanibal Jones, sếp của bộ ba thám tử, không đi cùng được. Thật vậy, hôm nay chú Titus cần Hanibal phải ở lại Thiên Đường Đồ Cổ để giúp việc.
Mệt nhừ nhưng vui sướng, hai cậu đạp xe dọc theo một bờ tường cao rào quanh một khu nhà, thì một tiếng lạ vang lên trong đêm :
-Cứu với!
Peter ngạc nhiên thắng gắt và dừng lại đột ngột. Bob va vào bạn.
-Úi! Lưu Trữ Nghiên Cứu càu nhàu.
-Cậu nghe không? Peter thì thầm.
Peter dựng xe đạp lên và ngạc nhiên nhìn bức tường chìm trong bóng tối.
-Mình có nghe, có thể có ai đó bị thương?
Khi đứng yên lắng tai nghe, hai bạn nghe như có tiếng chà vào tường phía bên kia.
Rồi tiếng kêu lại vang lên lần nữa:
-Cứu!
Lần này không thể lầm được nữa. Một kẻ vô danh đang yêu cầu được cứa giúp. Cách hai bạn không xa lắm, trong tường có cái cổng với sắt đầu nhọn như mũi lao.
Không do dự, Peter thả xe đạp ra, chạy đến cổng sắt. Bob lao theo sau. Đột nhiên Lưu Trữ Nghiên Cứu không nén nổi tiếng thốt lên pha lẫn sự ngạc nhiên và đau đớn:

Cả hai cùng xem vật trong tay Peter, đó là một pho tượngbé tí bằng kim loại sáng. Tượng hình một người đàn ông dáng vẻ lạ lùng, mỉm cười, ngồi xếp bằng.
-Cái gì vậy hả Peter?
- Đừng hỏi mình, chắc là cái gì đó để treo đâu đó. Trên đầu thằng người có cái khoen.
-Ai đã ném nó qua bức tường, Bob thì thầm, có thể...
Bob bị ngắt lời bởi những tiếng ồn ào không rõ phía sau tường rào. Có người đang bước nặng nề giữa bụi cây. Rồi tiếng nói vang lên:
-Nó đã vứt một cái gì đó ra ngoài, ra xem đi!
-Em sẽ tìm ngay thưa sếp, giọng nói thứ nhì đáp.
Một bàn tay vô hình bắt đầu mở cái cổng nặng nề. Peter và Bob nhanh nhẹn nhìn thấy có bụi cây gần đó liền đẩy xe đạp vào đó trốn.
Cổng mở ra với tiếng cót két. Một cái bóng hiện ra giữa hàng cây sau cổng. Hai thám tử nín thở, căng mắt nhìn qua lá bụi cây. Cái bóng tiến lại gần bụi cây, xa hơn, rồi tiến ra ngoài đường cái.
-Cậu có nhìn thấy đó là ai không? Bob thì thầm.
-Không! Trời tối quá!
-Bọn mình nên mang trả cái tượng nhỏ này không, dường như nó cũng quí giá đấy.
-Mình nghĩ... ? nhìn kìa!
Một bóng đen vừa mới xuất hiện cách chỗ trốn của hai thám tử có hai bước. Hai cậu lặng người đi. Cái bóng cao trội hẳn lên, trông nó cao, hơi khoèo,gù nữa. Hai thám tử để ý đến cái mũi rất dài, hình mỏ chim, và cái đầu nhỏ, động đậy không giống người, như để nhìn khắp mọi phía.
Đột nhiên một tiếng cười quỉ quái vang lên trong bóng tối. Tiếng cười xuất phát từ cái bóng kì dị kia, gần sát bên hai thám tử. Peter và Bob hoảng sợ cảm thấy muốn bỏ chạy thật nhanh. Nhưng tiếng cười đã ngưng trong khi cái bóng đáng sợ hỏi bằng một giọng bình thường:
-Mày không tìm thấy cái gì hết phải không? Thôi kệ, bây giờ trời quá tối rồi!
Đạ đúng thưa sếp, người đàn ông đứng xa hơn một chút trên đường trả lời.
Cái bóng gù có tiếng cười kì quặc chờ cho người kia về tới chỗ mình. Rồi cả hai trở vào trong khu nhà, cái cổng cót két đóng lại phía sau lưng. Peter bà Bob vẫn nấp trong bụi rậm cho đến khi cổng đóng hẳn và tiếng bước chân của hai cái bóng kia đã xa dần.
-Cậu có thấy tên kia không? Bob hỏi nhỏ.Cái tên có cái đầu kì quặc ấy. Và tiếng cười nữa, tiếng cười khủng khiếp... là cái gì vậy?
-Mình không biết và mình không muốn biết chút nào. Peter đáp.
-Bọn mình hãy về nhanh và kể cho Hanibal nghe những gì đã thấy tối nay.
- Đúng, ý kiến hay!
Hai thám tử leo lên xe đạp và lại lao nhanh trên đường. Hai bạn chưa đi được đến khúc quẹo thứ nhất thì tiếng cười hoang dại lại vang lên phía sau lưng. Hai thám tử tiếp tục đạp kịch liệt và chỉ vững lòng đạp chậm lại khi nhìn thấy ánh đèn thành phố Rocky.

- Giống như vàng khối! Hanibal Jones tuyên bố.
Trông sếp của ba thám tử trẻ thật minh mẫn khi nghiên cứu pho tượng nhỏ bé.
- Có giá hả? Bob hỏi thăm.
- Chắc là có, Hanibal gật đầu. Không chỉ vì bằng vàng.
- Kìa Babal, Peter bắt bẻ. Có gì quí hơn vàng đâu?
Bức tượng nhỏ óng ánh giữa các ngón tay của Hanibal.
- Các cậu hãy xem, Hanibal nói, mức độ chạm trổ tinh vi của vật này.Chắc chắn là tác phẩm của một nghệ nhân tài giỏi. Xem đôi mắt nhỏ xíu này, cái đầu đội mũ lông vũ này. Có lẽ đây là cái bùa cổ, hình một người da đỏ. Mình đã từng thấy những cái giống như vậy trong các viện bảo tàng.
Ba thám tử trẻ đang tập họp trong chiếc xe lán cũ dùng làm bộ tham mưu.
Trong khi Peter và Bob kể cho xong cuộc phiêu lưu trên núi, Hanibal vẫn tiếp tục xem bức tượng nhỏ bằng vàng. Cuối cùng Hanibal thở dài:

- Cậu nghĩ sao về cái bóng kì lạ? Bob hỏi.Mình chưa bao giờ thấy ai có vóc dáng và tiếng cười kì lạ như vậy.

- Cái đó thì có nghe chứ! Peter và Bob đồng thanh kêu lên.??
Nét mặt Hanibal tỏ ra hết sức thắc mắc.
- Theo như các cậu mô tả địa điểm, mình nghĩ các cậu ở ngay trước khu nhà Sandow.
- Tất nhiên! Bob kêu lên. Một khu nhà rộng lớn, đáng lẽ mình phải biết.
- Khu nhà chủ yếu gồm đất vùng núi, Hanibal nói thêm, nhưng xưa kia cha của bà Sandow nuôi rất nhiều gia súc.
- Bây giờ họ không còn gia súc nữa hả? Peter hỏi.
- Không còn, Bob trả lời. Mình nhớ là có đọc khá nhiều về khu này ở thư viện thành phố. Cha của bà Sandow là người cuối cùng làm cho khu nhà sinh lời. Khi ông chết con gái ông là người thừa kế duy nhất. Bà sống ẩn dật, không bao giờ gặp được bà.
Bob rất thích tìm tòi ở thư viện thành phố và luôn biết đủ thứ chuyện về đủ loại chủ đề. Thông tin của Bob luôn chính xác. Hanibal kết luận:
- Nghĩa là những gì các cậu đã nghe và thấy là khá bất thường, các cậu à. Những người đàn ông đó làm gì trong nhà bà Sandow và pho tượng nhỏ từ đâu ra?
- Hay là tượng nhỏ thuộc một lô đồ vật lấy cắp từ nhà bà Sandow? Peter gợi ý.

Bob và Peter cúi xuống nhìn mảnh giấy.
- Đúng vậy, Bob thất vọng thừa nhận. Không hiểu gì hết.
Đột nhiên Bob tròn mắt:
- Nhưng... nhưng, Bob cà lăm, cái này không viết bằng mực! Đó là máu!
- Cậu nói đúng, Hanibal nói. Đây là máu. Nói cách khác kẻ viết bức thông điệp này phải viết bằng cách không có bút, không có mực.

- Tất nhiên rồi!Nhưng người nào?
- Thì... chúng ta quen một người biết đủ thứ tiếng trên thế giới và cũng quen đủ loại người có thể giúp chúng ta.
- bác Alfred Hitchcock! Peter la lên.
- Đúng, Hanibal xác nhận.Tối nay thì trễ quá rồi, nhưng sáng mai chúng ta sẽ đi gặp bác và cho bác xem bức thông điệp.

Hanibal đắc thắng.

- Haniabl ơi, Bob thốt lên, cậu có nghĩ là ai đó đã tìm ra kho báu Chumash rồi không?
- Và có kẻ khác cố gắng lấy cắp nó không? Peter nói thêm.

- ?, xem ai đằng kia kìa... thằng Skinny Norris!
- Không hiểu nó đến đây làm gì nhỉ? Bob nói khẽ.

Thím Mathilda nhìn ba bạn bằng một con mắt ngiêm khắc.

Hanibal thừa hưởng từ chú Titus? tình yêu đồ cũ, thích thú ngắm nhìn đống kho báu đang hiện ra trước mắt mình.
- Ở đây có những món đồ thật sự đáng quan tâm, Hanibal thành thật nói. Nhìn cái xa kéo sợi cũ kia! Còn cái tráp bút du lịch cổ nữa kìa!
Suốt một giờ, Hanibal, Peter và Bob mừng rỡ kiểm kê đống đồ bụi bặm. Tạm thời không còn ai nghĩ đến cái bùa, đến kho báu Chumash và tiếng cười của cái bóng bí ẩn. Cuối cùng lưng bị mỏi ê ẩm, Hanibal đứng dậy nhìn đống đồ cũ trước mặt.

Ba Thám Tử Trẻ quay lại nhìn thấy một người đàn ông to cao , mặc quần áo thể thao. Cặp mắt xám long lanh, mái tóc vàng cắt viền một khuôn mặt đỏ, có vết sẹo nhỏ ở mép làm ông có vẻ như luôn mỉm cười.
Ted giới thiệu ông Harris là bạn của bà Sarah.
- Các cậu quan tâm đến vụ trộm đúng không?
Ông phát âm có giọng anh nhưng hơi khác so với giọng của Ted.

Ônh Harris cười.
- Các cháu nói chuyện như thám tử vậy đó.

Hanibal đưa cho ông Harris tấm danh thiếp. Tiếng cười của ông Harris lại vang lên lần nữa:
- Nếu vậy các cậu có thể thử tìm lại pho tượng của bà Sandow, thám tử thật à? Các cậu đã từng làm sáng tỏ những vụ bí ẩn thật à?

Bà Sandow cười với cháu.
- Thì nếu các cháu hứa không làm điều gì nguy hiểm hết, thì bà sẵn sàng thưởng, bà đề nghị thưởng 50 đôla.

- Các cậu có để ý không?
- Để ý gì? Peter ngạc nhiên hỏi.
- Anh Ted hỏi về ý nghĩa ba dấu chấm hỏi trên danh thiếp của chúng ta.
- Có gì lạ đâu,mọi người luôn hỏi vậy.- Bob nhận xét.

Hai thám tử nhìn nhau trong bóng tối.
- Không hiểu chuyện gì đang xảy ra ở vùng này, Peter nói nhỏ.
- Mình rất muốn biết, Hanibal thở dài, xúc động hơn là chịu thừa nhận boón cái bóng không đầu. Có thể khi đến gần, ta sẽ nhìn thấy một cái gì đó qua cửa sổ, cửa sổ đóng không kĩ lắm!

- Ở thư viện, con có tìm thấy cái con muốn tìm không? mẹ hỏi.

Đúng lúc đó, thám tử trưởng và thám tử phó đang nấp trong lòng một bụi cây, thật xa nơi mà tiếng cười quỉ quái đang làm cho hai bạn khiếp hồn khiếp vía. Hai bạn đang thở hổn hển. - Không được! Đừng có bắt mình làm thế! Peter phản đối. Cái bóng có tiếng cười khủng khiếp dường như đi dạo khắp nơi!
Hanibal không nói nữa. Cậu chỉ thở dài:
- Thôi, chắc là cậu nói đúng. Không nên đùa với lửa, mà mình không hề thấy cái bóng khi tiếng cười vang lên.
- Thì mình cũng có thấy đâu, nhưng nghe thôi là quá đủ rồi. Mấy trò chơi kiểu này đủ cho ngày hôm nay rồi. Mình đề nghị về nhà... thật nhanh!
Hanibal không trả lời ngay, cậu có vẻ chìm đắm trong suy nghĩ. Peter lo lắng chờ Hanibal quyết định.
- Này Peter ơi, mình có cảm giác những người đàn ông da nâu và những người đàn ông cười có liên quan với nhau trong vụ này.
- Mình cũng thấy hiển nhiên, mặc dù mình không thấy mối liên quan nào.
- Chính ta phải tìm ra mối liên quan đó, Peter à. Nhưng hiện, thì mình đồng ý với cậu. Việc hay nhất mà chúng ta nên làm bây giờ là chạy nhanh khỏi nơi này.

- Cậu muốn biết tại sao mình im lặng à? Mình không tin là anh Ted đã nói thật với mình, Hanibal băn khoăn thú nhận.

Hanibal và Bob vừa đẩy cổng vào thì thím Mathilda lao tới.
- Đây rồi!... Hanibal, cháu có sẵn sàng lên đường đến nhà Sandow không?
